ghs-usa_1200px_DefWhat is HazCom?

In 2012, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) incorporated the third revision of the GHS Standard in the 29 CFR 1910.1200 standard, commonly known as HazCom. This standard specifies classification criteria, while also standardising label elements and chemical product information to be indicated in the SDS concerning the US market.

HazCom is being updated

Right now, OSHA is working on harmonising the Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom) with the 7th UN GHS revision.

Among the differences reported in the provisional text, some of which related to the 4 revisions of the UN GHS subsequent to the third, we can highlight:

  • New definitions for some hazards (i.e. combustible dust, gas, solid, liquid)
  • Review of the whole structure of the Flammable Gas classification (Category 1 will be splitted in categories 1A and 1B)
  • Addition of Category 3 for Aerosols (which were previously called "Flammable Aerosols")
  • Alignment of labeling criteria with UN GHS 7 and Canadian requirements
  • Various changes, clarifications and updates relating to the HazCom MSDS

Trace One is monitoring the situation and will update you concerning this important update of the HazCom standard.
