Regulation EU 2018/1513 has been published, brings changes to restrictions of REACH Annex XVII

The importance of restrictions

substances-restrictions-relevanceRestrictions are a tool for protecting human health and the environment from unacceptable risks that come with some hazardous chemical substances. Restrictions, described in Annex XVII of Regulation EC n° 1907/2006 (REACH), can limit or forbid the production, use or placing on the market of a specific substance. Restrictions to which a substance or mixture is subject must be specified in the 15th section of the SDS.

What has been changed in Annex XVII according to the new Regulation?

Regulation UE 2018/1513 introduces restriction 72, concerning the use of 33 CMR substances (meaning Carcinogenic, Mutagenic and toxic for Reproduction) in clothes, shoes and textile products.

This document has been published in the Official Gazette of the European Union on October 12th 2018, and came into force on November 1st 2018. The restriction itself will come into force on 1st November 2020. Concerning the use of Formaldehyde (CAS 50-00-0) in jackets, coats or stuffing material, a transitional period will last until November 1st 2023.
