DRAFT REGULATIONS PUBLISHED FOR AMENDING LIMITS OF HEAVY METALS

FSSAI has published draft regulations, titled “Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) (Amendment) Regulations, 2015.”, proposing amendments to limits of heavy metals. The limits include those of- lead, arsenic, tin, cadmium, mercury and chromium. The draft regulations shall be open to comments (In Hindi and English).

The following will be inserted along with the existing food categories for the respective heavy metals limits upon publication in the official gazette:

It should be noted here that the authorties have published another notification dated 12 July, 2013 wherein 7 varieties of olive oil (Virgin Olive oil, Extra Virgin olive oil, Ordinary virgin oilve oil, Refined olive oil, Olive oil, Refined olive-pomace oil,Olive pomace oil) were specified for lead and arsenic limits. However, the above draft includes only 3 types- Olive oil, refined; Olive oil, virgin and Olive oil, residual (Olive oil pomace).
