New maximum residue levels for 2,4 - DB in food.
While The European Commission published the Corrigendum to Commission Regulation (EU) 668/2013 of 12 July 2013 amending Annex II and Annex III to Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 as regards maximum residue levels for 2,4 – DB, a new report by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has found that more than 97% of foods contains pesticides residue levels that fall within legal limits. From this report, it has been valued that half of food products in Europe contain residues of pesticides. From this analysis results that the highest rate of exceeding safety limits was for strawberries (2.5% of the sample), followed by lettuce (2.3%). They are especially sensitive to fungus and bugs and so undergo considerable spraying with pesticides.
Also, EFSA said that 1.5% of the samples clearly exceeded the legal limits, even when measurement uncertainty was taken into account. The Parma-based agency said the results had triggered legal or administrative sanctions against the food business operators responsible.
