FSSAI To Issue Junk Food Guidelines

The Honorable High Court of Delhi has directed FSSAI to issue a detailed guideline on ‘Junk Food’, referred to as foods that contain high levels of fat, sugar and salt (HFSS). Further to the directive, the regulator has also decided to constitute a scientific expertise group to examine in detail the adverse effects of ‘Junk food’ within India. The experts will be required to provide advice and recommendations to FSSAI regarding:
- Health risks associated with intake of HFSS and the levels of healthy intake of fat, sugar and salt.
- Potential risks caused by intake of HFSS in vulnerable populations in India.
- Recommend limits for fat, sugar and salt in foods for manufacturing, processing, import and marketing.
- Labeling requirements for pre-packaged foods.
- Prescribe regulations for display of fat, sugar and salt in sold food products/ those served in eating joints/ catering facilities.
