The Honorable High Court of Delhi has directed FSSAI to issue a detailed guideline on ‘Junk Food’, referred to as foods that contain high levels of fat, sugar and salt (HFSS). Further to the directive, the regulator has also decided to constitute a scientific expertise group to examine in detail the adverse effects of ‘Junk food’ within India. The experts will be required to provide advice and recommendations to FSSAI regarding:
Health risks associated with intake of HFSS and the levels of healthy intake of fat, sugar and salt.
Potential risks caused by intake of HFSS in vulnerable populations in India.
Recommend limits for fat, sugar and salt in foods for manufacturing, processing, import and marketing.
Labeling requirements for pre-packaged foods.
Prescribe regulations for display of fat, sugar and salt in sold food products/ those served in eating joints/ catering facilities.
