Mexico: New Food Additives Allowed

On December 2015, Mexican Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (COFEPRIS) published in the Official Journal amendments to Annex VI: Enzymes of the “Agreement that establish the additives and processing aids in food, beverages and food supplements, their use and health standards”.

This amendment releases a list of additives and adjuvants that are allowed in food: Beta-Amylase and Lactase. The safety of these additives has previously been evaluated and approved by the Mexican Secretary of Health.

Other amendments have been published for Additives permitted in infant formula, follow-on formula and special nutrition needs formula; Adjuvants and Flavorings. Natural fruit extracts, Ethyl vanillin and Vanilla extracts are some of the additives that are now on the positive list.
