The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (S. 764) was signed by President Barack Obama on July 29, 2016. This law defines bioengineered foods and will require all U.S. food labels to declare if GMO’s are present in the product. This newly signed bill overturns Act 120, which was the state of Vermont’s ruling that required the labeling of GMO products.
The Secretary of Agriculture has 2 years to determine the rules and establish the mandatory standard and requirements. Companies will have labeling options which include stating the GMO status on the label, digital link or phone number where consumers can find more information about the product.
