EFSA Issues Scientific Opinion to Re-evaluate Dimethyl Polysiloxane (E 900) as a Food Additive

On May 06, 2020, the European Food Safety Authority has published a scientific opinion to re-evaluate the safety of dimethyl polysiloxane (E 900) as a food additive ("Re-evaluation of dimethyl polysiloxane (E 900) as a food additive“).

A 26-month toxicity study in rats was conducted and the conclusions drew to the withdrawal of the ADI for dimethyl polysiloxane (E 900) of 1.5 mg/kg bw per day, as previously established by Scientific Committee on Food (SCF) in 1990. A No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) of 1,742 (for female) and 2,055 mg (for male) dimethyl polysiloxane/kg bw per day was identified.

The Panel claims that there is no safety concern at the reports uses and use levels for dimethyl polysiloxane (E 900). Moreover, multiple specifications are recommended to be amended.
