EU Amendment on Maximum Levels of Dioxins and Dioxin-like PCBs in Certain Foodstuffs

On November 18th, 2022, the European Commission published a regulation on the “(EU) 2022/2002 amending Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 as regards maximum levels of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in certain foodstuffs”.

The document summarizes the following points for implementation:
  • The regulation establishes the limit of 2 pg TEQ (toxic equivalence)/kg body weight/week for the sum of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs;
  • Maximum residue limits have been set for products such as meat and meat products from caprine animals, horses, etc., and to extend the current maximum level for hen eggs to all poultry eggs except goose eggs;
  • The dietary exposure studies indicate a significant increase in the weekly intake levels in the general population;
  • The regulation establishes to lower MRLs in Milk and Dairy products to ensure a higher level of human health protection;
  • The regulation shall amend Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 on the date of implementation.

All Food Business Operators shall comply with the Maximum Residue Limits set out in this regulation with effect from January 01, 2023.
