EU Commission Authorizes the Use of a Genetically Modified Soybean

On September 28, 2020, the European Union Commission approved the use of a genetically modified soybean, the XtendFlex. The decision has come after a thorough assessment and comprehensive analysis of procedures of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in favour of scientific opinion of European Food Safety Authority.

The scope of the authorization has been clearly defined and are set as follows:

  • The three varieties of soybean MON 87708 x MON 89788 x A5547-127 shall be used for food and feed uses.
  • No crop cultivation is acceptable within European Union
  • Products produced from GMO Soybeans must comply with EU’s strict labelling and traceability rules

The authorization is valid for 10 years.
