On November 10th, 2021, the European Food Safety Authority published an article on “Review of the existing maximum residue levels for Spirodiclofen according to Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005”.

The scope of the document highlights the following:

  • Reviews the maximum residue levels (MRLs) currently established at the European level for the pesticide active substance Spirodiclofen;
  • Spirodiclofen is no longer authorized in the EU thus MRLs were established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (codex maximum residue limits; CXLs);
  • Safety assessment of the available data on the CXLs and import tolerances indicates no apparent health risk to consumers;
  • Spirodiclofen is classified as carcinogenic 1B with threshold, all MRL proposals derived still require further consideration by risk managers.
