In an amendment to the farm and food bill, France aims to ban Titanium dioxide (TiO2) in foods. After a study conducted by INRA (French Agricultural Research Institute) where rats were fed TiO2 nanoparticles and it was revealed that it caused damage to the colon.
TiO2 is used in the food industry as a colorant in confectionaries. It is the most widely used white pigment because of its brightness.
Even though EFSA published a study claiming there are no health concerns from TiO2, France asked the European Commission to suspend the authorization of TiO2 and reassess its impacts on health.
