FSANZ Publishes Food Standards Variation on Composition and Labelling of Electrolyte Drinks

fsanz-publishes-food-standards-variation-on-composition-and-labelling-of-electrolyte-drinksOn August 12th, 2022, the Food Standards Australia New Zealand’s federal register of legislation published the “Food Standards (Proposal P1030 – Composition and Labelling of Electrolyte Drinks) Variation”. The Schedule varies Standards in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.


The scientific document outlines the following key points:


  • The standard 1.1.2 is varied by substituting the definition of ‘electrolyte drink’;
  • Various sections are included under Division 4 of Electrolyte drinks and electrolyte drink bases, such as composition, labeling and labeling requirements, and the prohibition on the recommended dietary intake information;
  • Health claims about electrolyte drinks must be made unless the food has an average osmolality of 200–340 mOsmol/kg;
  • Claims in relation to the tonicity of electrolyte drink must meet an average osmolality of 250–340 mOsmol/kg.


The regulation is effective on the date of publication in the official gazette.
