India Publishes Food Safety & Standards Amendment Regulations 2021 on Foods for Infant Nutrition

On September 22nd, 2021, the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) published a “Draft Notification of the Food Safety and Standards Amendment Regulations 2021 on Foods for Infant Nutrition” to further amend the 2020 regulation.

The document highlights the following key points:

  • In the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020, regulation 4 related to labelling, the “Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011” shall be substituted with “Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020”;
  • Regulation 7 clause (g) (19) which specifies “Vitamin B12, µg”, has been substituted;
  • Regulation 7 clause (2) part (3) which specifies “where an infant formula in powder format is manufactured without the use of any vegetable oil, linoleate, vitamin E, starch, specified food additive and optional ingredients, the product may be named as Infant Milk Food”;
  • Regulation 10 (2) clause (a) which specifies “Packaging gases” has been inserted.

 

The draft is open for public consultation until November 23rd, 2021.
